local initiatives more important than international aid
For more than three years now, I’ve been working with friends and colleagues around the world in order to document what people hit by armed conflict or major disasters do to survive and protect themselves.
We’ve interviewed more than 1,000 people affected by crises in Myanmar/burma, Susan, South Sudan and Zimbabwe. In the opinion of the affected people themselves, their own efforts by far outweigh the importance of aid brought in by external actors such as the UN or international agencies.
